The predecessor of Guizhou Normal University, the "National Guiyang Normal College," was established in 1941 and was one of the eight national normal colleges in China at that time. In 1950, it was renamed "Guiyang Normal College"; in 1954, the Ministry of Education entrusted the management to the Guizhou Provincial People's Government; in 1985, it was renamed "Guizhou Normal University"; and in 1996, it was designated as a key provincial university by the Guizhou Provincial People's Government. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the university has made steady progress in various undertakings and in 2015 became a jointly established institution of higher education by the Ministry of Education and the Guizhou Provincial People's Government. The university has successively been awarded titles such as "National Civilized Unit," "National Civilized Campus," "National Advanced Unit in Mass Sports," and "National Advanced Unit in Legal Publicity and Education," and has been approved as a doctoral degree granting institution and a postdoctoral research station (in Chinese Language and Literature, Marxist Theory, and Mathematics). It is recognized as one of the "first batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform" and is a university under the Ministry of Education/National Foreign Experts Bureau's "111 Plan."
The university covers an area of approximately 2,690 acres. It has 26 colleges and 1 continuing education college. There are nearly 34,000 full-time students enrolled, and 2,553 faculty and staff members, among which 856 hold doctoral degrees. The faculty includes 326 professors and 641 associate professors, as well as 5 candidates for national talent programs, 1 Yangtze River Scholar Distinguished Professor appointed by the Ministry of Education, and 36 experts enjoying special government allowances. Over 90 individuals have been awarded national titles and honors such as National Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Experts, National Teaching Masters, and National Excellent Teachers; and over 240 individuals have received provincial-level talent titles and honors, such as Core Experts in Guizhou Province and Provincial Managed Experts.
The university offers a comprehensive range of disciplines, encompassing 12 categories such as philosophy, literature, education, engineering, and science. It currently has 4 first-class disciplines for domestic construction in Guizhou Province, 7 first-class regional disciplines in Guizhou, 2 "World-class Construction Discipline II Categories (Groups)" in Guizhou, 1 "Domestic First-class Construction Discipline I Category (Group)" in Guizhou, 10 doctoral degree authorization points in first-level disciplines, 25 master's degree authorization points in first-level disciplines, and 25 master's degree authorization points in professional degree categories. There are currently 81 undergraduate programs, including 56 "Double Ten Thousand Plan" first-class programs (28 national-level first-class undergraduate program construction points and 28 provincial-level first-class undergraduate program construction points). The university offers 6 national-level first-class undergraduate courses, 1 national-level ideological and political course demonstration course, and 151 provincial-level "golden courses."
